Supporters and opponents of Egypt's ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, have clashed in the capital, Cairo.

According to officials, Monday clashes erupted after several hundred pro-Morsi protesters marched towards the US Embassy to stage a demonstration against alleged American interference in Egypt's domestic affairs

The pro-Morsi march then entered Cairo’s iconic Liberation Square that was manned by Morsi’s opponents.

The two sides then hurled stones at each other. Gunfire was also reported but it was not known who was firing.

Security forces fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators while reports say at least two people were killed and dozens of others injured in clashes.

Earlier in the day, Morsi’s family said they plan to take legal action against Egypt's army chief for having “kidnapped” the toppled president.

“We are taking local and international legal measures against Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the leader of the bloody military coup, and his putschist group,” Morsi’s daughter Shaimaa Mohamed Morsi told a news conference.

Morsi’s son Osama also said the family had not heard from him since his ouster. The family held the army responsible for “the health and safety” of Morsi.

Tension has intensified in Egypt since al-Sisi said on July 3 that Morsi was no longer in office. He also suspended the constitution and dissolved the parliament.

On July 4, the military declared the chief justice of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, as interim president.

Morsi has been held at an undisclosed location since his overthrow in the military coup. Several countries, including the US and Germany, have called for his release.
